Taxidermy Course Descriptions
Our taxidermy training program lasts eight weeks for a total of 320 class hours, and is offered three times per year. Please see our calendar page for available course dates. Class runs Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am to 4:00 p.m.

Our taxidermy course covers Birds (upland game & waterfowl), Mammals (life-size, gameheads, & rugs), Fish (cold & warm water species), Antler Plaques, and Business/Marketing Procedures. All Specimens & Supplies needed to complete the required mounts are included in the price of tuition. Any student who wishes to substitute a specimen for any of the standard ones provided, will be credited (if he/she supplies the specimen), or charged extra if we supply the replacement. For example, the gamehead portion of the course includes specimens and supplies for 2 deer/antelope size gameheads. If a student wishes to do an elk for one of their gameheads, they will be required to pay the difference between the deer & elk specimen & form costs. If the student provides their own elk, they will be credited the cost of the deer specimen.

Please see information below for a detailed summary of each phase of our taxidermy training program.

Birds & Habitat You will begin your eight week taxidermy training with the Bird portion of our course. Birds are a primary part of a successful taxidermy studio. Turn around time is quick, expense is low, and equipment needed is minimal.
Each student will mount 4 birds (2 upland game & 2 waterfowl). Because taxidermy techniques vary a little between upland game & waterfowl, it is important to do both species. If however, a student wishes to do a turkey or a goose as one of their birds, then only 3 birds will be required.

During the Bird portion of the course, students will learn to properly measure specimen, check condition of plumage, skin, degrease, mount, and apply finishing techniques. Custom habitat scenes will be incorporated into each mount. This section of the program takes approximately 80 hours.

Mammals & Habitat
Proficiency in mammal taxidermy is very important, as mammals comprise a large percentage of the work done in most taxidermy studios. Learning mammal taxidermy is one of the most challenging and rewarding sections of our entire course!
Taxidermy cougar mount
Each student will complete 2 Gameheads (deer, antelope size), 2 Lifesize,(ie; coyote & raccoon) and one open mouth rug (coyote size or smaller). Due to the detail involved with open mouth mounts, extra time is required. Therefore, if a student wishes to do another open mouth mount, (such as a bugeling elk), then the rug will need to be done close mouthed.
Taxidermy Mule Deer Mount
During this section of the taxidermy program, students will learn how to check in the animal, as well as proper measuring, skinning, turning of eyes, ears, & lips, splitting of nose, fleshing, salting, and tanning. Each student will learn custom form alteration for that one of a kind mount. Along with the standard taxidermy mounting procedures, students will learn custom finishing techniques that will make each mount shine with realism. With each mammal, a custom habitat will be incorporated. All airbrushing will then be completed. This section of the taxidermy training program will take approximately 140 hours to complete.

Fish & Habitat

Fish taxidermy is the most artistic section of the program. It is important to master fish, as the "average Joe" can spot a poorly mounted fish much more readily than any other type of mounted taxidermy. After completing the fish taxidermy portion of our course, you can be confident that your mounts will be true works of art!
Brook trout taxidermy mount
During the Fish portion of the course, students will learn to properly measure, skin, flesh, degrease, & tan fish, in addition to custom mannikin carving, mounting, drying, finishing techniques, and airbrush painting. Each student will mount 4-6 fish. Both cold and warm water species are required. With the increasing popularity of catch & release fishing, we recommend each student include a fiberglass reproduction as one of their fish mounts. Habitat scenes will be created to add a finishing touch and to further enhance that lifelike appearance.

Taxidermy School antler plaque
Antler Plaques

Antler Plaques have a fast turn around time, and are good projects for taxidermists who need to fill in a couple of hours between more time consuming jobs. Although each student will be required to complete one felt covered Antler Plaque, Skull Plaques will be also be discussed.

Business & Marketing
In the Business & Marketing section of our taxidermy course, students will learn filing and bookkeeping, and customer relations. Permits will be discussed, as well as State & Federal regulations. Proven marketing techniques will be taught so that each student will have the tools and confidence necessary to begin their successful New Career in Taxidermy! This section of the program will take approximately 20 hours.
