Proficiency in mammal taxidermy is very important, as mammals comprise a large percentage of the work done in most taxidermy studios. Learning mammal taxidermy is one of the most challenging and rewarding sections of our entire course!
This section of the taxidermy training program will take approximately 140 hours to complete.
Each student will complete 2 Gameheads (deer, antelope size), 2 Lifesize,(ie; coyote & raccoon) and one open mouth rug (coyote size or smaller). Due to the detail involved with open mouth mounts, extra time is required. Therefore, if a student wishes to do another open mouth mount, (such as a bugeling elk), then the rug will need to be done close mouthed.
This course will include a visit to a live deer pen where students will study live deer and how to use live animals as references.
During this section of the taxidermy program, students will learn how to

- check in the animal,
- as well as proper measuring,
- skinning,
- turning of eyes, ears, & lips,
- splitting of nose,
- fleshing,
- salting, and
- tanning.
Each student will learn custom form alteration for that one of a kind mount. Along with the standard taxidermy mounting procedures, students will learn custom finishing techniques that will make each mount shine with realism. With each mammal, a custom habitat will be incorporated. All airbrushing will then be completed.
